elemental frame drumming at the summer solstice
with sarah bonner morgan & joanie bones
Fri June 20th 6.30pm to Sun June 22nd 3pm
The frame drum is one of the most ancient musical instruments in the world. In many cultures it is played using one's hands rather than sticks or beaters, and the resulting rhythms are hypnotic and meditative - perhaps for this reason it is associated with various spiritual traditions. In ancient Mediterranean cultures it was played by women.
In the UK it is very rare to find an opportunity to learn to play frame drums in person and to do so with others.
Where better to learn this ancient spiritual instrument than in the wild mountainous region of Wester Ross in the north west highlands of Scotland, home to some of the oldest landscapes on earth.

Sarah Bonner-Morgan has been playing frame drums (mainly Tar and more recently Daf) for approximately fifteen years. Also an Alexander Technique teacher and a Sufi practitioner, Sarah brings her deep love of the drum and her humble, wise, playful energy to sharing her love of the drum. She is a delightful, skilled teacher who inspires confidence and ease in others. Deeply informed by the work of the female drummer Layne Redmond, author of the book When The Drummers Were Women, Sarah will be teaching Layne's method of 'elemental drumming', where each stroke corresponds to one of the elements: earth, air, water and fire. Singer and drummer Joanie Bones will be assisting Sarah, leading some singing over the weekend. During the weekend we will have opportunities to visit some of the beautiful places in the area and experience the elements for ourselves, and to celebrate the solstice somewhere the sun hardly sets! |
