joanie bones
Joanie Bones sings 'Mad Trad', a genre of her own invention which encompasses her deep love of British folk song, harmony singing and experimental percussion. Raised in London and of mixed Persian and Jewish ancestry, Joanie brings a unique perspective to the folk arts of song and story of the British Isles. Transcending the divides of urban/rural, ancient/modern, indigeneity/diaspora, spirituality/politics, art/activism and song/story, she gathers the fragments of cultures, lands and the human experience into a music of soul, spirit and connection and into tales of wonder and compassion.
Mentored by four-time winner of the Scots Singer of the Year Award Siobhan Miller and with a background as a professional storyteller, Joanie is committed to using song and story as a power for exploring meaning and creating unity. Much-loved songwriter and troubadour Martin Stephenson has described Joanie as 'one of his favourite artists' and Skipinnish's Alasdair Murray has described her live performances, which often move people to tears, as 'enchanting'. Joanie continues to gather and sing over the bones of our culture’s brokenness, calling us back into wholeness and belonging.
