bio
Joanie Bones gathers the fragments of cultures, lands and songs into a music of soul, spirit and connection. A talented writer of contemporary folk song who also keeps a vast compendium of songs filed in her heart, Joanie's compelling live performances feature a capella vocal looping, experimental percussion and a unique contemporary take on British folk music. Audiences describe being 'blown away' by her shows which feature songs and stories in equal part. Previously a professional storyteller in some of the UK's most deprived neighbourhoods, Joanie is something of a modern-day bard, committed to using song and story as a power for exploring meaning and creating unity.
Joanie isn't your typical traditional singer: a Londoner of Persian and Jewish heritage who has spent much of her life in Scotland, Joanie has a unique perspective on the British folk tradition which she has loved and sung for decades. Having stepped away from a career in music in her early 20s due in part to the lack of diversity within the UK folk scene at the time, in the short time since deciding to return to music Joanie has been mentored by four-time winner of the Scots Singer of the Year Award Siobhan Miller and has played opening sets for much-loved songwriter and troubadour Martin Stephenson. Martin has described Joanie as 'one of his favourite artists', while Skipinnish's Alasdair Murray has called her work 'enchanting'.
Joanie's performances are compelling, often moving people to tears, and her workshops and listening circles have been described by many as amongst the most powerful they have ever attended. Currently working on groundbreaking women’s song project The Great Big Women's Song Medicine Kit which is due to premiere at festivals summer 2024, Joanie continues to respond to the needs of this moment, gathering and 'singing over the bones' of our culture’s brokenness, calling us back into wholeness and belonging. Her blog about her experiences of the lack of ethnic diversity in the Scottish folk scene has started a national conversation about how to address the issue, and she is co-host of the University of Sheffield's Access Folk podcast, exploring how to make folk singing in England more accessible.
