THE LIGHT

is a groundbreaking  project bringing voice, connection, solace and healing around issues which women have traditionally had to face alone; the many stopping points along a woman's lifepath which they've had to keep in the safe recesses of their hearts; the experiences, stories, fears and desires that women have been silently told women they're not allowed to share.

Thank goodness that time is now passing.

The project was initiated after listening to several female friends describe experiences of deep isolation and confusion whilst going through the menopause. After holding intergenerational 'listening circles' for women around the topic, Joanie realised there was a world of information around the menopause not commonly shared, and that the root of the problem was the silence surrounding the topic. She began to  explore what other issues are similarly surrounded in silence,
and to look for songs from the traditional canon which might help give voice to the issues. In many cases, she found there were none. And so THE LIGHT was born.

Comprised of two balancing parts, THE LIGHT  features narrative songs based on women's stories and experiences of some of these topics, balanced with a collection of beautiful, mesmeric songs which soothe, heal and connect.  Think lullabies for the soul, or balm to soften all those generations of enforced silence and separation, songs to make your  heart sing, connect us to each other, and help us on this healing journey. Together. It's an ongoing song project with two aims:  awareness-raising and soul medicine.

Joanie is currently developing a participative show combining these songs with stories as a way of creating community around these important topics.
